Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson

On tonight’s quick start:

“I thought we came out and played with very good intensity in the first half. In the second half, things got a little sloppy. We need to rotate better when we are rebounding. They were only 4-21 in the half court in the second half, but they got a lot of second chances. It has to be one and done.”

On junior Ivana Catic:

“I thought her shot selection was very good. She showed a lot of poise and had a lot of control over our offense. She also did a good job of getting others high-percentage shots in our offense. Ivana (Catic) was very good today.”

On dealing with foul trouble:

“We have a lot of kids that are really starting to get what we are trying to do here. They understand the primary and secondary looks that we want from our offense. One thing we are really starting to do is to make plays, not just run plays. At times we tried to force things, but we are an unselfish team and at times we try to make one pass too many. As a team, we are starting to believe in each other more and more everyday that we play.”

Sophomore guard Sade Morris

On the game:

“It felt good to come out and play two solid halves tonight. We have definitely improved in that aspect from last year. It’s great to know that our hard work in practice is finally starting to play off in the games. We need to continue to come out and play 40 minutes; tonight we proved that we can do that. I’m very proud of our team tonight.”

On Kansas’ defense:

“I don’t think we did badly on defense but there are areas where we definitely could have done better. There were times when we got lucky when they were missing shots. We have to step it up on defense, but overall we didn’t do badly tonight.”

On her scoring ability:

“I’m feeling a lot more confident and comfortable than I did last year. I know my role on this team and what I’m capable of; now it’s just a matter of going out and do what I have to do.”

Sophomore forward Danielle McCray

On Kansas’ offense:

“Nicolette (Smith) stepped up big tonight and got some clutch threes. Those threes helped get the momentum going. I think it’s good for everyone because teams don’t know who they have to stop.”

On her rebounding:

“Being on the perimeter helps give I an awareness of where the ball is going to come off the rim and I crash the boards all the time. Playing on the inside last year helped me get into that position. Offensive boards are a big part of my game.”

Head Coach Shimmy Gray-Miller

On getting off to a slow start:

“We were really tentative. And for whatever reason, we were afraid of getting blocked or fouled. So we were going up soft and very lax. That is not indicative of us. I was disappointed about that. It is hard to win a game when you shoot 22 percent from the field in the first half. It is hard to compete when you do that.”

On attacking the basket in the second half:

“That was an adjustment. As talented as Kansas is, we thought that we could attack them offensively. That is what we saw on film as far as their one-on-one defense. I am proud of my kids for executing that in the second half.”
