Dec. 3, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas swimming and diving team leads Houston, 138-45, and trails Harvard, 96-89, after the first session of a three-team dual held Friday at Robinson Natatorium. Ten events were held in the first session, which included the one-meter diving competition.

Kansas began the meet with a Robinson Natatorium-record setting performance in the 200 medley relay. Junior Lindsey Urbatchka, sophomores Jenny Short and Hannah Bakke, and freshman Terri Schramka teamed up to finish in a time of 1:45.07. The Jayhawks also won the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay. Seniors Amy Gruber, Jackie Krueger and Aly Colver joined Schramka and finished in a time of 3:27.50. Schramka picked up another victory in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.64.

“I was really pleased with how we swam tonight,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “We didn’t know where we would be after competing as hard as we did at the Nike Cup, but I thought we did a great job finding our strokes.”

The Jayhawks recorded another individual victory in the 200 freestyle, as junior Gina Gnatzig finished in a time of 1:51.73. Gruber also collected an individual win in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.36. On the diving board, sophomore Shelby Noonan was the top-placer for Kansas, as she finished fourth with a score of 244.94.

“Tomorrow will be a challenge for us, especially coming back after a small amount of rest,” Campbell added. “I think we will be up for the test.”

The Jayhawks will complete the two-day double dual beginning at 12 p.m., Sat., Dec. 4, in Robinson Natatorium..
