KU freshman Thoma to Play Summer Ball in New York

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The Little Falls Miners of the New York Collegiate Baseball League have announced that <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas freshman Zach Thoma will play for the Miners this summer.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Thoma, an Omaha, Neb. native, was named all-state honorable mention twice at Creighton Prep, hitting .375 with eight stolen bases and 13 RBI during his senior season. He helped to lead his team to a district championship as a junior and a state tournament appearance as a senior. At Kansas, Thoma plays for Jayhawks’ assistant coach Kevin Tucker, who coached the Little Falls Diamond Miners in 2006.

The 5-foot-10 infielder is one of 10 true freshmen on the Jayhawks’ roster for the 2008 season. The Jayhawks open their regular season on Feb. 22 at Hawaii-Hilo.
