Kansas Takes Over First Place With a Dominating Friday

Kansas swimming and diving assumed first place with 750.5 points in the second day of competition at the Kenyon Invitational. KU placed first in every event and was led by Maria Mayrovich, who earned four first place finishes Friday night. Kansas will look to wrap up first place on Saturday, the final day of the Kenyon Invite.

Kansas positioned itself well for Friday night’s finals with solid preliminary performances earlier in the morning. In the preliminary races, KU had the top qualifying time in each event.

Kansas opened Friday night’s competition with a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Mayrovich, Danielle Herrmann, Emily Lanteigne and Amanda Maez combined to touch the wall first in a time of 1:32.45. KU also placed fourth and tenth in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Ashley Leidigh won the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 2:00.08. Stephanie Payne placed second with a time of 2:01.97.

Mayrovich, a member of the 200 yard freestyle team and 400 yard medley relay teams, won two individual events. She placed first in the 200 yard freestyle and the 50 yard freestyle in times of 1:48.52 and 22.82, respectively.

Kansas’ returning NCAA Championship participant, Herrmann, was victorious in her lone individual race of the night. Herrmann set the pool record in her 100 yard breaststroke victory in a time of 1:02.67.

Sophomores Joy Bunting and Iuliia Kuzhil won their respective individual events Friday night. Bunting was victorious in the 400 yard I.M., finishing in a time of 4:22.02. Kuzhil took the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 55.47.

KU’s 400 yard medley relay team, consisting of Kuzhil, Herrmann, Leidigh and Mayrovich won the Friday night’s final race in a time of 3:44.30. That time was over 2.4 seconds ahead of the second place competition.
