Dec. 6, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has released its first Central Region rankings for the 2006 season. The singles rankings include two Kansas student-athletes, while the doubles version features one Jayhawk duo.

Headlining the list for Kansas is freshman Ksenia Bukina, who checks in a No. 14 in the rankings. Bukina, a native of Obninsk, Russia, had a very good fall season for the Jayhawks, finishing tied for first on the team with seven singles victories.

Also in the singles rankings is sophomore Elizaveta Avdeeva, who starts the season 29th. Avdeeva, also of Obninsk, Russia, spent much of last season in the top singles spot for the Jayhawks, and figures to be one of the teams’ top players again this year.

Avdeeva and Bukina also appear in the doubles rankings as the No. 11 duo in the Central Region. The two compiled a 6-6 mark in the fall while competing with each other.

Kansas will open its 2006 spring match season on Jan. 22 when it takes on Ball State and Indiana in Bloomington, Ind.
