Kansas Captures Kenyon Invitational Championship

GAMBIER, Ohio – Kansas swimming and diving won the Kenyon Invitational Championship with 1319 points on Saturday night. The Jayhawks took the top spot in six events on Saturday. KU was led by wins in both the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Kansas, as they did on Friday, positioned itself well for Saturday night’s finals with solid preliminary performances earlier in the morning. In the preliminary races, KU had the top qualifying time in each event.

KU’s 200 yard medley relay opened Saturday night’s competition with a first place finish. Iuliia Kuzhil, Danielle Hermann, Ashley Leidigh and Maria Mayrovich combined to touch the wall in a time of 1:42.21.

Shannon Garlie recorded the top finish for the Jayhawks in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:02.15 and finished fourth.

Danielle Herrmann, in addition her 200 Medley Relay first place finish, added an individual title to her resume on Saturday night. She won the 200 yard I.M. and a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in times of 2:05.16 and 2:18.53

Maria Mayrovich tallied another individual first place finish on Saturday with a victory in the 100 yard freestyle. She touched the wall in a time of 49.03.

Iuliaa Kuzhil won the 200 yard backstroke for the Jayhawks in a time of 1:59.07. Ashley Leidigh took the top spot in the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 54.58

KU closed its dominating Kenyon Invitational performance with a victory in the 400 yard freestyle. KU’s `A’ team touched the wall in a time of 3:24.25.

KU’s diving team is in action this weekend in Columbia, Mo., for the Mizzou Invite. Erin Mertz led the Jayhawk divers with a second place finish on the 3 meter board Friday night. Mertz scored 296.95 points. Meghan Proehl and Hannah McMacken placed sixth and seventh, respectively.

Mertz also led KU on Saturday evening’s 1 meter competition with a fourth-place finish. Mertz tallied 279.05 points. Proehl placed eighth with 266.65 points.

The Jayhawks next action will be in Miami, Fla., for back-to-back duels with FIU and Miami on January 9 and 10.
