Track and Field Opens Season at K-State All Comers Meet

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The University of Kansas track and field team begins the 2006-07 season at the K-State All-Comers Meet Saturday at Ahearn Fieldhouse in Manhattan, Kan. The meet, one of six indoor meets the team will compete at before the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 23-24, will commence over the entire day, providing the Jayhawks with their first taste of competition.

The Jayhawks will see some familiar competition at the event, as Big 12 foes Kansas State and Oklahoma State will be among the 15 schools competing. The meet will start with the men’s and women’s weight throw at 10 a.m. and conclude with the 1600 meter relay at 6:45 p.m.

The men’s team returns two-time All-American sophomore Egor Agafonov, who captured Big 12 titles in the indoor weight throw and the outdoor hammer throw. The Togliatti, Russia, native set a new KU and Big 12 record with his performance in the outdoor hammer throw with a heave of 225-2. The men’s squad also returns junior Matt Baysinger, who placed second in the 800-yard run and junior Paul Hefferon, who placed third in the 5000m at the 2006 Big 12 Indoor Championships.

On the women’s side, the Jayhawks welcome the return of junior Crystal Manning, who placed fourth in the triple jump at the 2006 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Joining Manning will be senior Shatoya Hill, another talented triple jumper who earned seventh at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in the event and sophomore Zlata Tarasova, who earned fourth in the weight throw at the 2006 Big 12 Championships.
