Dec. 8, 2008

IRVING, Texas –

University of Kansas junior guard-forward Danielle McCray was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week while Adaora Elonu (Texas A&M) was selected Freshman of the Week by a media voting panel for games of Dec. 1-7. McCray picked up her first career honor while Elonu was recognized for the second time this season.

An Olathe, Kan., native, McCray averaged 21 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.0 steals in Kansas’ two games last week. She shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the field and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the three-point line.

McCray opened the week with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals in leading KU to a 93-49 win over San Jose State. In the Jayhawks’ second game of the week, McCray tallied 22 points and 13 rebounds to collect her third double-double of the season. She knocked down 8-of-17 shots from the field vs. Marquette, including 6-of-8 from the three-point line on her way to a team-high 22 points.

McCray becomes the first KU player to receive a Big 12 weekly honor since Krysten Boogaard was named Rookie of the Week on Feb. 4, 2008. The most recent Player of the Week honor from Kansas went to Crystal Kemp on Jan. 3, 2006.

The Jayhawks (5-1) will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 10, when they welcome Western Illinois to Allen Fieldhouse. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
