Kansas Freshman Tyshawn Taylor Named Big 12 Rookie of the Week
Dec. 8, 2008
IRVING, Texas – Kansas freshman Tyshawn Taylor was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week in a voting by a panel of media covering the conference, the league announced Monday. Iowa State’s Craig Brackins and Texas’ A.J. Abrams shared Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week accolades.
Taylor helped Kansas to a 3-0 record last week, as the Jayhawks posted wins over Kent State (87-60), New Mexico State (100-79) and Jackson State (88-62). The Jersey City, N.J., guard averaged 15 points and 5.3 assists, shooting 44.7 percent from the field. The high scoring total of the week came versus NMSU as Taylor finished with a career-best 23 points, including 14 in the first half. He had his first career double-double against Jackson State with 10 points and 11 assists. It was just the third points-assists double-double by a Big 12 player this season. Taylor is the Jayhawks’ third-leading scorer with 11.8 points per game. He is second on the squad with 30 assists and tied for second with 12 steals.
This is the first time this season and 13th time in the history of the Big 12 that a Jayhawk has been named Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week. The last KU player to earn the honor was Brandon Rush on Jan. 9, 2006. Rush won the honor three times in 2005-06, while Mario Chalmers and Julian Wright each won it once during that season.
Brackins posted back-to-back double-doubles last week, leading Iowa State to two victories. The sophomore forward averaged 22.5 points and 13.0 rebounds, connecting on 48.6 percent from the field. He tallied the second 30-point outing of his career with 31 points at Northern Iowa to help ISU end a 10-game road losing streak in a 71-66 overtime victory. He also had 16 rebounds, the first Cyclone to have a 30-point, 15-rebound effort since 1995. Brackins has scored in double figures in all seven games this season.
Abrams turned in a strong performance in his only game of the week as Texas defeated UCLA. The senior guard had a game-high 31 points, tying his career mark. He was 9-of-18 (.500) from the floor, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. He also connected on 8-of-9 free throws in 39 minutes. It was the third time in his career that he has notched 30 points or more and his 20th game with at least five field goals from beyond the arc.
