LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior forward Carolyn Davis scored 10 consecutive points in the opening three minutes of the game to lead No. 17 Kansas past Newman University, 97-64, Sunday at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks took control early and never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 17-4 lead at the 14:23 mark in the first half behind Davis’ 5-for-5 shooting from the field. Kansas’ 51-31 halftime lead was its largest at the intermission this season, as well as the most points scored in the first half of a game since putting up 69 in a 126-63 victory over Maine on Dec. 1, 2010.

Coach Bonnie Henrickson got her 50th consecutive home victory over a non-conference opponent in the regular season as her team fell just short of its second triple-digit scoring performance in its last four contests.

Kansas led by as much as 36 with 2:09 left to play, holding an advantage of 20 points or more in nearly all of the game’s final 20 minutes. KU finished the game shooting 54.8 percent from the field on 40-for-73 shooting with 68 of their points coming from inside the paint.

It was the third time this season that the Jayhawks shot better than 50 percent in a game.

Davis finished with a team-high 24 points three days after her team’s first loss of the season at Arkansas, where she moved to 11th on the program’s all-time scoring list. She currently needs 63 more points to surpass Angie Snider and to crack the top 10.

Sophomore forward Chelsea Gardner also finished with 17 points in addition to her game-high nine rebounds, averaging 16.3 points and seven rebounds per game in her team’s last four contests. Two other Jayhawks scored in double-digits in the win–All-American candidate Angel Goodrich added 11 points and seven assists, while fellow senior Monica Engelman tacked-on 10 more.

Despite the loss, Newman guard Alexandra Ciabattoni finished with a game and career-high 27 points on 11-for-20 shooting. Ciabattoni, a freshman from Adelaide, Australia, was also 2-for-3 from beyond the three-point line.

UP NEXT: Kansas will have a week off for finals before returning to action on Dec. 16 at home against Prairie View A&M. The Jayhawks will follow that with one of its toughest games of the season–a Dec. 21 road contest in Berkeley, Calif., against the 11th-ranked California Golden Bears.
