Jayhawks Turn in Winning Performances at Season-Opening Meet

The <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas track and field team started the 2006-07 season in a flurry at the K-State All-Comers Meet Saturday in Manhattan, Kan. Nine KU student-athletes won events at the meet and sophomore Stephanie Horton earned a NCAA provisional mark in the shot put. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Horton registered a NCAA provisional mark with her winning toss of 50-11 feet in the shot put.

Junior Matt Baysinger set a new meet record in the 600 yard run, winning the event in 1:11.32. Senior Cody Roberts won the weight throw with a heave of 56-01 feet.

Freshman Jack Sachse, making his Kansas debut, won the 800 meter run in a time of 1:55.19, while junior Ashley Brown won the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.67 seconds.

The women’s team captured the top six places in the 3000 meter run, as senior Melissa O’Rourke won the event in a time of 10:20.76. She was followed by freshman Lauren Bonds, who finished second (10:33.33) and junior Hayley Harbert, who placed third (10:36.91).

Junior Crystal Manning took second in the long jump (18-10.50) and third in the triple jump (39-03.25).

The meet was not team scored. The Jayhawks return to competition Jan. 13 in Champaign, Ill., when they participate in the Illini Classic.
