Jayhawks Calm the Westerwinds, 66-43

Junior Danielle McCray led the Jayhawks with 18 points as the Kansas women’s basketball team defeated Western Illinois 66-43 in Allen Fieldhouse Wednesday night.

Kansas improved to 6-1 with the win, while Western Illinois, led by Amanda Walker’s 18 points, fell to 2-7 on the season.

The Jayhawks led from the start, jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead and going on a 10-2 run midway through the half to go up 20-10. KU went into the locker room up 33-21, led by sophomore Nicollette Smith, who was 3-of-5 from behind the arc with 11 points. Smith finished the game with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-8 from three-point range.

Western Illinois came out strong in the second half with a 9-2 run and cut the KU lead to five before the Jayhawks were able to regain their balance. Kansas carefully rebuilt the lead, holding WIU scoreless for 6:27 in the second half and outrebounding the Westerwinds 39-24 in the contest.

The Jayhawks tallied 14 steals on the evening, the most steals by Kansas this season. KU also outscored WIU in the paint by a margin of 24-10.

Junior Sade Morris led Kansas with seven rebounds, while junior Porscha Weddington and Smith each chipped in six. Morris also led the Jayhawks with four steals and junior LaChelda Jacobs and senior Ivana Catic had three apiece.

McCray paced the Jayhawks by shooting an efficient 58.3 percent from the field (7-of-12).The Jayhawks shot 40.4 percent from the field as a team, hitting 23-of-57, including 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from behind the arc.

KU will be in action again Saturday, December 13 when it travels to Omaha, Neb., to take on the Creighton Bluejays. The game is schedule for 3 p.m., at the Omaha Civic Center.
