Dec. 13, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas head football coach Charlie Weis added to his staff Tuesday afternoon by announcing former Notre Dame and Akron quarterbacks coach, Ron Powlus, has joined the Jayhawks. Powlus will coach the quarterbacks at KU. He joins Tim Grunhard and Reggie Mitchell, as Weis begins completing his coaching staff at Kansas.

Powlus joins the KU staff after serving as the passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Akron for the past two seasons.

Prior to his time at Akron, he served as the quarterbacks coach at Notre Dame under Weis for three seasons and helped develop Jimmy Clausen into one of the most prolific passers in program history. In 2009, Clausen was named an All-American after completing a school-record 68 percent of his passes (289-for-425) for 3,722 yards and 28 touchdowns with four interceptions.

Powlus also worked with Weis on the Notre Dame staff as the director of player development in 2005 and 2006, helping the Fighting Irish secure a pair of top 10 recruiting classes.

Powlus was a four-year starter at Notre Dame from 1994-97, setting 20 school records during his time as a player. He started 44 games for the Irish in his career and completed 558-of-969 passes for 7,602 yards and 52 TDs.

He spent three seasons in professional football, playing for the Tennessee Oilers, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles from 1998-2000. He also spent one season playing for the Amsterdam Admirals in NFL Europe.

A native of Berwick, Pa., Powlus graduated from Notre Dame in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the school’s College of Business Administration.
