QUICKLY – Eighth-ranked Kansas (11-1 overall, 7-1/t-1st Big 12 North) will make its 11th bowl appearance in school history as well as its third in the last five seasons when the Jayhawks face third-ranked (BCS) Virginia Tech (11-2/7-1 ACC) in the FedEx Orange Bowl in Miami Gardens, Fla. on Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. Central… KU is making its third bowl appearance in the last five years (KU was 6-6 last season, but did not receive an invitation)… <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas is 4-6 in bowl games all time, including a 41-13 win against Houston in the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl in its last appearance… KU has won three of its last four bowl games… Kansas has won a school record 11 games this season… KU has won 14 of its last 16 games dating back to last year… KU was ranked as high as second by all four major polls on Nov. 18.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

BOWL HISTORY – As mentioned, Kansas is making its 11th all-time bowl appearance as well as

its third in the last five seasons. Sixth-year head coach Mark Mangino has become the first KU coach to ever

take three Jayhawk teams to bowl games. Here is a quick look at KU’s bowl history:

KANSAS-VIRGINIA TECH SERIES HISTORY – Kansas and Virginia Tech will be

meeting for the first time on the football field. KU is 2-16 against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference

with its last meeting a 56-26 loss to North CarolinaState in the 2003 Tangerine Bowl, which was played

in Orlando, Fla. Prior to that, the Jayhawks had last faced an ACC team in 1993 when KU met FloridaState in

the 1993 Kickoff Classic. KU’s two wins against the league both came against FloridaState as the Jayhawks

defeated the Seminoles 28-0 in 1973 and 40-9 in 1974. KU is 2-5 vs. FloridaState, 0-1 vs. Georgia Tech, 0-4

vs. Miami, 0-2 vs. North Carolina, 0-2 vs. North CarolinaState and 0-2 vs. Virginia.

ORANGE BOWL CONNECTIONS – Kansas head coach Mark Mangino will be making

his second Orange Bowl appearance as he was an assistant coach at Oklahoma when the Sooners played

in the 2001 game and defeated FloridaState en route to the national championship… Kansas has one player from the state of Virginia in backup TE Marc Jones, who is from Norfolk (Lake Taylor HS). Jones’ father Leslie played football at Virginia Tech… KU assistant media relations director Mike Cummings spent one year (2005-06) in the media relations office at Virginia Tech… KU women’s basketball coach Bonnie Henrickson was an assistant at Virginia Tech from 1988-95 and the head coach for the Hokies from 1997-2004 before taking over at KU… KU has one player returning to his home state of Florida to play in WR Tertavian Ingram, who is from Tampa (Thomas Jefferson HS)… KU has several connections to the state of Florida. KU wide receivers coach Tim Beck played collegiately at Central Florida (1984-85)… KU linebackers coach Steve Tovar was a defensive assistant coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2006… KU offensive line coach John Reagan played one season for Miami in the AFL in 1994… KU hosted Florida International in a game this season and will play at South Florida next year.
