Dec. 16, 2010
DUBAI, UAE –
University of Kansas swimmer Monica Johannessen competed in the 50-meter butterfly on the first day of the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships in Dubai Thursday. The sophomore from Haugesund, Norway, placed 34th with a time of 27.72.
“Monica’s first race of the World Championships was very good,” Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. “It should give her a lot of confidence going into the 4 x 100 Free Relay tomorrow.”
Johannessen’s time of 27.72 was 2.49 seconds off the leader, Therese Alshammar from Sweden. Alshammar also holds the world record in the 50 butterfly with a time of 24.38, set in November 2009.
Johannessen will represent Norway again Friday when she competes in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay. Please check back with kuathletics.com for results from the second day of the championships.
