KU Men's Hoops Returns Home to Face Winston-Salem State Tuesday

Following a road game in Kansas City and a week of final exams, No. 11/12 Kansas (8-2) returns home to face Winston-Salem State (1-13) Tuesday at 7 p.m. KU is coming off a 68-58 win against Toledo in the American Century Investments Shootout Dec. 9 at Kemper Arena in Kansas City. Winston-Salem State dropped its 10th-straight game with a 76-32 loss at Georgetown Saturday.
Kansas is 8-2 and has won two straight and seven of its last eight games. On Dec. 11, the Jayhawks were ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press and No. 12 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ polls. Kansas has four players who are averaging double figures in scoring led by freshman forward Darrell Arthur at 13.8 points per game. Arthur also leads the team with 22 blocked shots. Sophomore guard Brandon Rush is next in scoring at 13 points per contest and is second on the team in rebounding with a 5.9 average, just ahead of Arthur’s 5.8 boards per game. Sophomore forward Julian Wright leads KU in rebounding with a 7.9 average to go along with his 11.6 points per outing. Sophomore guard Mario Chalmers is next in scoring at 10.7 points per game and leads the team with 23 steals. Junior guard Russell Robinson rounds out the starters with a 6.9 scoring average. He paces KU with 53 assists and has 19 steals. Junior forward Darnell Jackson leads the team in field goal percentage at 61.9 percent and is scoring 7.7 points per contest. Freshman guard Sherron Collins is right behind at 7.4 points per game and is making 40.6 percent from three-point range. Kansas scores 76.4 points per game compared to its opponents’ 59.2 average. KUâTMs outrebounding foes 39.9 to 32.1.
About Winston-Salem State
Winston-Salem State is in the second year of a five-year transition to the NCAA Division I level from Division II where it posted 49 winning seasons and won the 1967 national championship. Winston-Salem State (1-13) will be looking to snap a 10-game losing streak after its 76-32 loss at Georgetown Saturday. Sophomore forward Jamal Durham leads the team in scoring with 9.8 points per game, rebounding at 4.6 per contest and with 11 blocked shots. Freshman guard Darius Floyd is next in scoring at 8.5 points per game. Fellow freshman guard Brian Fisher is next at 7.8 points per contest. Junior guard Roy Peake leads WSSU in assists with 47 and steals with 23 to go along with his four points per game. Tonight’s game will be the 12th road game of the season for the Rams.
Kansas and Winston-Salem State are meeting for the first time in men’s basketball.
Kansas continues its four-game home stand when it plays host to Boston College on Saturday, Dec. 23. The game will tip at 1 p.m. and be televised on CBS. Boston College entered the year ranked 25th nationally. KU then plays host to Detroit on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. and Rhode Island Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
