OPENING TIP

The University of Kansas (5-4) will travel to Bloomington, Ind., to face the Indiana Hoosiers (10-2) on Thursday, Dec. 21. KU and IU will tip-off at 6 p.m. in Assembly Hall.

FAST BREAKS

-Freshman Kelly Kohn was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week on Monday. Kohn poured in a season-high 19 points in KU’s victory over Santa Clara.

-Against Santa Clara, KU’s bench outscored SCU’s 45-8. On the season, the Jayhawks bench has out produced the opponents by a wide 256-145 margin.

-Among Big 12 Freshman scoring leaders, KU’s Kelly Kohn (10.0) ranks fourth, Danielle McCray (8.6) and LaChelda Jacobs (8.6) are tied for seventh while Sade Morris (6.8) is 13th.

-Indiana is 5-0 at home this season while the Jayhawks are 1-1 in road contests.

-Indiana received nine votes in this week’s Associated Press poll.

-Junior Jamie Boyd made her first start of the season and third of her career against Santa Clara. KU has used five different lineups in its nine games this year.

-Thursday’s game will be KU’s third against teams from the Big 10. Kansas has dropped a neutral court game to Iowa and a road contest at Wisconsin.

-Kansas will return to Allen Fieldhouse for games on Dec. 29 and Dec. 31. The Jayhawks will face Northern Illinois on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. before matching up with Xavier at 12:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

A LOOK AT KANSAS

Kansas snapped a three-game losing streak with a 78-68 victory over Santa Clara on Sunday. After a 19 point performance against the Broncos, freshman Kelly Kohn has taken over the team scoring lead with a 10.0 average. For her efforts against SCU, Kohn was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week. The young `Hawks have been led in scoring by a freshman in seven consecutive games. Thursday’s contest will be KU’s last road non-conference game. The Jayhawks have three home non-conference contests left.

A LOOK AT INDIANA

Led by first year head coach Felisha Legette-Jack, the Hoosiers have jumped out to a 10-2 record to start the season. After starting the year on a five-game winning streak, Indiana enters Thursday’s contest winners of its last three. The Hoosiers have scored victories over No. 15 Kentucky and perennial power Notre Dame.

Junior shooting guard Nikki Smith leads the Hoosiers offensively. The Sylvania, Ohio native is averaging a team-best 13.5 points per game while knocking down 44 percent (28-for-63) of her three-point attempts. Sophomore Whitney Thomas is pulling down 9.0 rebounds per contest while also leading the Hoosiers with 29 steals. As a team, IU is averaging 70.7 points per contest while allowing 63.3.

KU’S LAST OUTING

Four Jayhawks reached double digits as the University of Kansas women’s basketball team defeated Santa Clara, 78-68, Sunday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse. Freshman Kelly Kohn led KU with a career-high 19 points, including five three-pointers.

Kohn’s five three-point field goals marked a career high as well for the Adrian, Mich., native, and she also finished with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sophomore Marija Zinic added 13 points in the game and grabbed three rebounds. Senior Shaquina Mosley scored a career-high 12 points while also snagging three steals and two rebounds and assists. Rounding out the double-figure scorers for the Jayhawks was freshman LaChelda Jacobs, who scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.

The Jayhawks put together a complete team effort in the victory, as their bench outscored the Broncos, 45-8. Kansas also forced 23 Santa Clara turnovers, which it converted in to 28 points. Kansas shot 55.8 percent from the field, including 7-of-13 from beyond the three-point arc.

KOHN EARNS BIG 12 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Freshman guard Kelly Kohn was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Dec. 11-17. The Adrian, Mich., native scored a career-high 19 points and pulled down five rebounds while chipping in four assists and three steals to lead KU to a 78-68 victory over Santa Clara on Dec. 17.

Kohn hit on 5-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc and shot 6-for-9 from the floor in the contest. Kohn played a career-high 36 minutes including the entire second half. Kohn is the third Jayhawk to earn Big 12 Rookie of the Week and first since Aquanita Burras was honored on Dec. 9, 2003.

JAYHAWKS SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER

KU players took some time out of their busy schedule to spread holiday cheer during the holiday season. With the help of local donations, KU players browsed a local Target for the families’ Wish List” gifts. The Jayhawks purchased items for seven local families.

Players then visited LawrenceMemorialHospital on Dec. 18 to spread holiday cheer to patients. The visit marked the 14th consecutive year the Jayhawks have distributed items collected during the “Crimson & Blue Holiday Project” to LMH.
