Taylor Earns Second Big 12 Rookie Honor

Dec. 22, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the second time in three weeks, Kansas men’s basketball freshman Tyshawn Taylor was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week in a voting by a panel of media covering the conference, the league announced Monday.

Taylor helped Kansas to victory in its only game of the week, a 71-59 win over Temple. The Jersey City, N.J., guard finished with 11 points, shooting 4-of-7 (.571) from the floor. He also added one 3-point field goal and two free throws. Taylor had eight assists with just one turnover, plus four steals and one blocked shot. The assists and steals totals led KU in the victory. He has scored in double digits in seven of his last eight outings, while shooting .500 or better seven times in 2008-09. Taylor leads all Big 12 freshmen in assists (41), is tied for first with 18 steals and stands second among freshmen in scoring with 10.8 points per game.

This is the second time this season and 14th time in the history of the Big 12 that a Jayhawk has been named Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week. The last KU player other than Taylor to earn the honor was Brandon Rush on Jan. 9, 2006. Rush won the honor three times in 2005-06.

Taylor and Kansas are back in action Tuesday night in Tucson, Ariz., as the Jayhawks face off against Arizona. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 9:30 p.m. CT, and will be televised on Fox Sports Net.
