Carolyn Davis' Double-Double Leads Kansas to 80-57 Victory Against Texas-Arlington

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Sophomore Carolyn Davis recorded her second double-double of the season with 26 points and a season-high 12 rebounds to lead Kansas to an 80-57 victory against Texas-Arlington in Allen Fieldhouse Thursday night.

Junior Aishah Sutherland led the Jayhawks with 13 rebounds, marking her seventh double-digit rebound game of the season. Freshman Keena Mays – an Arlington, Texas, native – added 13 points, four assists and three steals, while sophomore Monica Engelman reached double-digit points for the seventh time in nine games, posting 11 points for the night.

Kansas improved its record to 12-1, its best start since the 2005-06 season when the Jayhawks also went 12-1 in its first 13 games. KU also remained perfect at home, moving to 9-0 in Allen Fieldhouse for the third consecutive season. UT-Arlington fell to 3-9 with the loss.

Seniors Tamara Simmons and Shalyn Martin led the Mavericks with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Kansas shot 48.2 percent from the field for the game, including 55.6 percent (5-9) from three-point range. KU out-rebounded the Mavericks 48-36, which included a season-high 38 defensive rebounds. Kansas also held a noticeable advantage in assists with 16 compared to only six from UT-Arlington. Sophomore Angel Goodrich led the Jayhawks with five assists, her third-straight game with at least five assists after missing seven games with a knee injury.

Defensively, Kansas held UT-Arlington to 32.8 percent from the field. The Jayhawks also grabbed 11 steals, led by Mays and Goodrich with three apiece.

Leading 16-11 with 12:30 remaining in the first half, Kansas used an 8-2 run to grab its first double-digit lead of the game, 24-13, with 10:09 on the clock. Following a jumper by Simmons, Kansas went on a 10-2 run in a two-minute stretch to grab a 30-15 advantage. KU never led by less than 10 points the rest of the game and took a 49-32 lead into halftime.

Davis led all players with 16 points and eight rebounds in the first half. Mays went a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range and 4-for-4 from the free throw line to score all 13 of her points before the intermission. As a team, Kansas out-rebounded UT-Arlington 27-16 in the first 20 minutes.

Kansas will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule when it hosts UMKC in Allen Fieldhouse Monday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on Metro Sports.
