Jayhawks Host Clinic for Douglas County Special Olympians

Dec. 30, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Fun was the name of the game Friday evening as the Kansas women’s basketball team welcomed members of the Douglas County Special Olympics to Allen Fieldhouse for a clinic. Jayhawk head coach Bonnie Henrickson, along with the KU players, hosted the two hour session with the local residents.

After Henrickson welcomed the group, the participants were split up into four teams. Each team was led by members of the 2011-12 Jayhawk squad.

After a group stretch, the teams ran through some station drills, working on basketball skills such as form shooting, layups, defensive stances, rebounding and passing. The teams then suited up for two rounds of games. Members of the KU team participated in the games with their respective teams for the day.

Following a tour of the KU facilities, Henrickson and her players participated in an autograph and photo session with the Douglas County group of athletes, with each athlete receiving an autographed basketball and poster to take home.

The Jayhawks, 11-1 overall, will open Big 12 Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 4, when they travel to Texas for an 8 p.m. game.
