🏆 Jayhawks Clip TCU to Claim Big 12 Championship Title

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Forward Mandi Duggan’s goal in the 55th minute proved to be the difference as the No. 21 Kansas Jayhawks defeated the TCU Horned Frogs, 1-0, to claim the Big 12 Championship title Sunday afternoon at Swope Soccer Village. The victory gave Kansas its first Big 12 tournament championship in program history and its first league title of any kind since winning the regular-season trophy in 2004.

The win moved the Jayhawks to 15-4-3 on the year and extended their unbeaten streak to nine games. TCU fell to 11-7-3 in its 2019 campaign.

After the match, tournament officials named Jayhawk goalkeeper Sarah Peters as the event’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player. The sophomore out of Lee’s Summit, Missouri claimed her second shutout of the tournament Sunday and ninth of the season.

It was a tightly contested match from the opening whistle, with neither side able to get on the board over the first 45 minutes of action. After the intermission, it took the Jayhawks just 10 minutes to find the game’s opening goal. Junior Ceri Holland found space down the right side of TCU’s end and sent a right-footed cross into the heart of the TCU box. There, Duggan used one touch to redirect it into the back of the net and gave her team the one-goal advantage. Duggan’s strike was her fifth of the season and eighth of her KU career.

From there, the KU defense took over. TCU remained on the attack for much of the final 20 minutes of play, but the Jayhawk backline and their sophomore goalkeeper, Peters, stayed firm. The Horned Frogs managed eight shots in the final 15 minutes of regulation but were unable to find the back of the net.

It appeared as though TCU would equalize the match with just under two minutes to play, but a pair of shots were saved off the line by Jayhawk defenders and the Horned Frogs were turned away empty again.

The match ended 90 seconds later with the Jayhawks claiming their first conference tournament title in the 25 years as a program.
