Al Hizam named Big 12 Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year

IRVING, Texas – Kansas junior Hussain Al Hizam was named Big 12 Men’s Track & Field Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year, announced by the league office on Friday with the release of the 2018 spring sports recipients. This honor marks the first time a KU track & field student-athlete has won the award since its inception in 2012-13.

Al Hizam posted a 3.33 grade point average this year as a finance major at Kansas. The Jubail, Saudi Arabia native is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team member and is currently a nominee for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, after being named Google Cloud Academic All-District this year.

The junior completed a successful 2017-18 season on Wednesday, finishing fifth in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships to earn his second-career outdoor First Team All-America honor. Al Hizam was the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Champion in the pole vault and won both the Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor crowns in the event.

A Scholar-Athlete of the Year is named in each of the Conference’s sponsored sports. Each Big 12 institution nominates one individual per sport with the winners selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

Al Hizam was the Men’s Track & Field Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year with Kansas State’s Brett Neelly. Kansas women’s golfer Ariadna Fonseca Diaz was named the Big 12 Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year as well on Thursday.
