Friday Night Game at Samford Suspended in Second Inning

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With a heavy unexpected pop-up shower at Joe Lee Griffin Field Friday night, both the Samford and Kansas baseball teams elected to suspend play until Saturday due to unplayable field conditions.

At approximately 6:19 p.m., a storm cloud rolled through Birmingham, Alabama, producing heavy rains for nine minutes. The unexpected nature of the shower didn’t allow the Bulldogs to get the tarp on the field in time and combined with the intensity of the downpour left a quarter inch of standing water on the infield.

With one out in the top of the second inning, Kansas and Samford were tied, 0-0. Senior lefty Ben Krauth tossed a one-two-three bottom of the first in 13 pitches, striking out two batters.

Resumption of the game will happen Saturday at noon, with the regularly scheduled 2 p.m. game to follow in doubleheader format.

Fans can listen to both games on the Jayhawk Radio Network via KUAthletics.com/Radio with the second game of the doubleheader also available on the dial on KJHK 90.7 FM.
