Groshans named Big 12 Player of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference announced Monday that Kansas junior catcher Jaxx Groshans was named the league’s Player of the Week.

Groshans reached base seven times in 13 plate appearances, including four hits and three walks during the first three games of the Jayhawks’ season-opening series at USC Upstate. Groshans finished with a league-best three homers and six RBIs in those three contests, while batting .400 (4-for-10). In addition, Groshans scored the second-most runs in the conference on the weekend at four.

“That is the best Groshans has played in the three years that he has been here,” head coach Ritch Price said. “Not just offensively, but defensively too. I couldn’t be more pleased with how well he caught those three games this weekend. He has a chance to be a big-time guy. If he can grow up and continue to handle adversity – that is clearly the best he has played since he has been at KU.”

In the Monday finale, Groshans batted 1-for-1 with a single and a RBI while drawing a career-high three walks.

Groshans and the Jayhawks return to action Feb. 22-24, when they play host to Texas Southern in a four-game series at Hoglund Ballpark.
