Jayhawks fall to Texas Southern

MELISSA, Texas – Texas Southern southpaw Mason Furlong stymied the Jayhawk offense, as the Kansas baseball team dropped the night cap of a Saturday doubleheader to the Tigers, 8-3, at the Melissa Sports Complex.

Furlong (1-1) surrendered one hit in the top of the first inning to Kansas (4-3) leadoff man freshman Jack Wagner and then went on to pitch seven shutout innings. He then went back out and recorded two outs into the eighth, but a three-run home run to KU sophomore third baseman Skyler Messinger ended his day after a 142-pitch effort.

Those two Kansas hits were half the total (4) Furlong gave up on the day and aided in the five-hit outing for the Jayhawks.

Texas Southern (1-6) tagged KU for four wind-aided home runs, including three off starter redshirt-freshman Eli Davis (0-1). In five innings, Davis allowed six runs, five earned, off eight hits while striking out four batters.

Wagner recorded two of the five his Kansas posted in his first-career start, while junior catcher Jaxx Groshans, junior left fielder Brett Vosik and Messinger each had one knock a piece.
