Piche’ Named to Stopper of the Year Watch List

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named senior captain and right-handed closer for the Kansas baseball team Jordan Piche’ to the 2014 Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List, as announced by the association Tuesday.

In its 10th year, the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award is given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. A total of 50 names appear on the initial watch list, with 17 of them tallying 12 or more saves a year ago, including Piche’.

In 2013, Piche’ recorded a league-leading 12 saves en route to Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and first team all-conference honors. He amassed a 1.68 ERA, that ranked No. 19 in the nation, in 32 appearances spanning 64 and a third innings.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected on a list released June 4, prior to the start of the NCAA Super Regional tournament. The NCBWA’s All-America Committee will select the winner, with this year’s recipient to be announced during the 2014 College World Series.

Piche’ and the rest of the Jayhawks travel to Peoria, Ariz., to open the 2014 slate against BYU at the Peoria Sports Complex Friday, Feb. 15. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (CST).
