Hernandez Named Co-Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference named junior transfer third baseman Aaron Hernandez its Co-Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Monday afternoon, for his performances in the first three games of a four-game series against BYU over the weekend.

Hernandez started all three contests for the Jayhawks in the opening weekend. In 12 at bats, he recorded five hits (.417) and five RBIs, including a one-out RBI double in the seventh inning of game one during Saturday’s doubleheader to break-up the no-hitter Brigham Young’s Kolton Mahoney was throwing. The RBI double put KU on top 1-0 and proved to be the difference maker as Kansas shutout the Cougars 2-0.

He helped out the team on defense as well, as he flashed some leather at the hot corner to rob two potential BYU hits that could have broken open the game with bases loaded and two outs.

In the nightcap, down 10-9 in the bottom of the 10th inning with one out and bases loaded, Hernandez found himself in a spot to tie the game with one swing, and he did exactly that. His deep sacrifice fly to left field scored the runner on third, tying the game and putting the Jayhawks in position to win.

Hernandez and the Jayhawks are in the midst of wrapping up a four-game set with the Cougars Monday afternoon, before heading to Port Charlotte, Fla., Feb. 21-24, for the Snowbird Classic.
