LAWRENCE, Kan. – Three home runs combined for four of the five Horned Frogs runs, as the Kansas baseball team fell to TCU, 5-2, Friday night at Hoglund Ballpark.

The Jayhawks (21-14, 5-5 Big 12) tallied nine hits on the night, eight off TCU starter Brandon Finnegan (6-2), with senior catcher Ka’iana Eldredge boasting the only multi-hit performance for KU (2-for-4). The Horned Frogs (21-12, 6-4 Big 12) chalked up five runs from their No. 3 and No. 4 hitters, Boomer White and Kevin Cron, who combined for four hits, three of them home runs, five RBIs and four runs scored.

Kansas sent senior right-hander Jordan Piche’ (4-4) to the mound to make his second-career start as a Jayhawk. Piche’ tossed six innings, allowing four runs off 10 hits in the loss.

The Jayhawks broke open the scoring in the second inning after back-to-back singles by senior centerfielder Tucker Tharp and junior first baseman Blair Beck led off the inning. However a failed bunt attempt by junior third baseman Aaron Hernandez left the bat in the hands of Eldredge, who came through with the big RBI-single through the left side to put KU on top, 1-0. Sophomore second baseman Colby Wright followed suit with an RBI-single of his own through the hole at short, driving in another Kansas run, 2-0.

The Horned Frogs answered back with a two-spot of their own in the fourth inning. White started it off with a one-out single to get on base for Cron. Battling a 2-2 count, Cron took the sixth pitch of the at bat deep over the wall in left field to tie the game up with one swing, 2-2.

TCU broke the tie in the sixth, thanks to back-to-back home runs to lead off the inning. White smashed one over the foul pole in left field, before Cron followed with a line-drive shot over the wall in left center, his second of the game, to put the Frogs up 4-2.

The Frogs tacked on an insurance run in the ninth coming from the bat of White. Kyle Bacak singled to left field with one out to start the rally, before Cody Jones walked. Derek Odell singled to load the bases for White, who hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field to drive in the run, 5-2, and seal the victory for TCU.

The Jayhawks and the Horned Frogs are back on the diamond Saturday, April 12, for game two of this three-game conference series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., and can be seen on the Jayhawk Television Network and ESPN3 outside the state of Kansas.
