Wright Named to Academic All-Big 12 Second Team

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference named Kansas sophomore second baseman Colby Wright to the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Baseball Team Thursday afternoon.

Wright is one of 65 Big 12 student-athletes honored by the conference, as he was tabbed with second-team recognition.

“He has emerged here in his sophomore year as one of the best offensive players at his position in the Big 12 Conference,” head coach Ritch Price said. “He has been an impact player for us.”

A native of Castro Valley, California, and sports management major, Wright is third on the team with a .331 batting average (44-for-133), third in runs scored with 32 and ranks second with 10 doubles.

“He is an outstanding student and outstanding person who conducts himself in a first-class manner on-and-off the field and in the classroom,” Price said.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA (grade-point average) or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshman and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. First team honorees hold a GPA of 3.20 or higher, while the second team recognizes those with a GPA of 3.00-3.19.

Kansas concludes the regular season with a two-game non-conference matchup with Michigan, May 17-18, before flying directly to Oklahoma City to prepare for the 2014 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at Bricktown Ballpark (May 21-25).
