Big 12 announces WBB 2019-20 schedule

LAWRENCE, Kan.—The Big 12 released its 2019-20 conference schedule Wednesday morning, and Kansas kicks off its league campaign Saturday, Jan. 4 on the road.

The Jayhawks will open up their 18-game conference schedule when they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to take on the Cowgirls of Oklahoma State on Jan. 4. This is the first time that KU has opened its conference play against the Cowgirls since the 2007-08 season.

KU’s first home contest against a conference opponent will be four days later (Jan. 8) when the Jayhawks host West Virginia inside Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks last home opener against the Mountaineers was in the 2015-16 season.

Kansas will face all Big 12 opponents twice (once at home and once on the road) as is customary in the league’s round-robin format. One highlight of this schedule format is two matchups against the reigning national champions in the Baylor Bears. KU won’t have to wait long to host the Lady Bears as they come to Lawrence on Jan. 15, just four games into the conference schedule. Kansas will then travel to Waco, Texas, on Feb. 5 for the team’s second go around.

In-state rival Kansas State is scheduled to come to Allen Fieldhouse in the heart of the team’s conference lineup on Jan. 29. Kansas will also conclude its 2019-20 regular season on the road against the Wildcats in Manhattan, Kansas, on March 8.

Other schedule highlights include home matchups against Oklahoma on Feb. 2, Texas on Feb. 15, Oklahoma State on Feb. 29 and Iowa State on March 3.

National television and third-tier television broadcast schedules are expected to be released soon.

Kansas returns six players from the 2018-19 campaign to go along with seven new faces. This includes five freshmen (Tamia Davis, Holly Kersgieter, Zakiyah Franklin, Chandler Prater and Chisom Ajekwu) and two transfers in Emma Merriweather and Tina Stephens.

KU’s 35th annual Late Night in the Phog presented by Hy-Vee is scheduled to take place on Oct. 4. The event will feature music by the KU pep band, routines from the spirit squad and dance teams, video highlights, scrimmages by the men’s and women’s hoops team, and much more.
