KU Distance Great Cookson Passes Away

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Former Kansas cross country and track star Grant Cookson passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

Cookson was a member of the Kansas cross country and track programs during their golden eras under the direction of head coach Bill Easton from 1954-57. The Clay Center, Kan., native was a member of four Big Seven cross country conference championship teams as well as eight indoor and outdoor track and field conference championship teams. He also helped the men’s outdoor track and field squad to a runner-up team finish at the 1956 NCAA Championships.
 
After his athletic career ended, Cookson remained a loyal member of the K Club and regularly attended Kansas Cross Country meets and the Kansas Relays.
 
Cookson’s memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer at 11 a.m. (address below).
