LAWRENCE, Kan. – One of the nation’s most popular cross country courses will be showcased this weekend in Lawrence when the Kansas men’s and women’s teams host the Rim Rock Classic Saturday morning. The men will kick things off at the Jayhawks’ home course, Rim Rock Farm, with the 8K race at 9 a.m., while the starting gun for the women’s 6K is set to go off at 10 a.m.

Both teams are coming off victories in the season’s opening meet, the Bob Timmons Classic (Aug. 31.), but will be tested with some stiff competition as they will go up against several highly-touted teams such as the No. 16 Michigan women, Kansas State, New Mexico State and the Rice men.

The KU men had a strong showing to kick off the year and hope to continue their early success. Freshman Tyler Yunk was the winner of the race but the Jayhawks had six top-25 finishers on the day, most of whom were underclassmen. This weekend the young Jayhawks will be joined by veterans the likes of senior Josh Munsch and juniors Reid Buchanan, Evan Landes and James Wilson all of whom will be making their 2013 season debuts. At last year’s inaugural Rim Rock Farm Classic in 2012, those four Jayhawks were among the victorious men’s team’s top-six finishers and will look to duplicate that effort Saturday.

The Jayhawk women also had an impressive start to the season as they had six top-10 finishers at the Bob Timmons Classic last month. Freshman Jennifer Angles led the way for KU finishing second overall in her first collegiate race. Saturday’s meet will be the debut for Natalie Becker in her senior campaign as well as the KU women’s top returner from the 2012 season, Hannah Richardson. Both Jayhawks will be expecting high finishes as to lead their young squad to its second win of the year.

The Kansas women are expected to field 13 underclassmen in their race Saturday which includes Angles, and Bob Timmons third- and fourth-place finishers Grace Morgan and Lydia Saggau. Kansas will need top performances from all if they are to contend with the national ranked squad out of Michigan, which won the Rim Rock Classic a year ago.

Complete results, along with a full recap of the event including video of athlete and coach reaction, will be available on KUAthletics.com following completion of the races. Also follow on Twitter at @KansasXC for live updates and results throughout the morning.

The Jayhawks will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 for their first road meet of the year, the ISU Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m., and will feature many of the top cross country squads in the nation.
