LAWRENCE, Kan. – In the midst of the 2018 Homecoming festivities, Kansas cross country hosts its second meet of the 2018 season, the Rim Rock Classic, on Saturday, Sept. 29. The women’s 6K will start the meet off at 9 a.m. with the men’s 8K to follow at 10 a.m.

A large number of schools will be in Lawrence to compete with the Jayhawks, including Big 12 foe Kansas State as well as Division I schools Oral Roberts and UMKC.

With nearly a month since their first meet of the season, the Jayhawks are eager to compete again and build upon their season-opening sweep at the Bob Timmons Classic.

“It was fun to watch them run well together to a point last meet, but we need to have them do that the whole distance and compete better at the end,” head coach Stanley Redwine said. “There’s a lot to work on this week and we’re hoping we can get it done.”

The variety of teams provides Kansas opportunities to compete with high-level competition before pre-nationals.

“All in all, I think both teams are healthy and that’s all we could really ask for right now,” Redwine said. “We’ll see how they compete with different competition and better competition.”

The Jayhawks claimed the top six spots in the women’s race at the Bob Timmons Classic, while the men had the top five runners. Despite the early success, Redwine and Kansas are taking each meet with a race-by-race mindset.

“We can’t take anything lightly,” Redwine said. “We have to go in and compete well because the meets continue to get harder and harder and harder. For us to put ourselves in a position to place well as a team in our upcoming meets, we need to do well and not overlook this weekend.”

Kansas is led by two-time Big 12 Champion Sharon Lokedi on the women’s side and redshirt-senior Chris Melgares and senior Michael Melgares, who finished third at last year’s Rim Rock Classic, leading the way on the men’s side.

The Jayhawks will travel to Madison, Wisconsin to compete next in the Pre-National Invitational on October 13. The meet will be run at Zimmer Championship Course, with the action set to begin at 11 a.m.
