Fusimalohi Named to Polynesian Player of the Year Watch List

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Polynesian Football Hall of Fame announced Wednesday that Kansas senior offensive lineman Ngalu Fusimalohi earned a spot on the 2014 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Watch List.

Bestowed to the most outstanding Polynesian college football player that epitomizes great ability and integrity, the award will be announced on Dec. 9. Five finalists will be unveiled Nov. 20 with the formal presentation to be held during the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend, Jan. 23.

The Polynesian Football Player of the Year Watch List candidates have been selected on past performance and future potential. Additions to the list may be made as the 2014 season progresses. The finalists and the winner will be chosen by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee, which is comprised of past college football head coaches Dick Tomey (Chairman), LaVell Edwards and Ron McBride, ESPN SportsCenter anchor Neil Everett, NFL player personnel expert Gil Brandt, past NFLPA president and inaugural inductee Kevin Mawae and Hawai’i sportscaster Robert Kekaula.

A native of Daly City, California, Fusimalohi started all 12 games at left guard for the Jayhawks in 2013 and earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors form the conference coaches after helping pave the way for halfback James Sims’ second-straight 1,000-yard rushing season. He was the only lineman to start all 12 games at the same position, helping KU average 154.1 rushing yards per game. He was also named KU Offensive Lineman of the Year by the Kansas coaching staff.

Previously this summer, Phil Steele Magazine honored Fusimalohi with 2014 Preseason All-Big 12 Second Team honors, while Athlon Sports tabbed him with third-team recognition.
