Kansas Football Opens 2013 Fall Camp Wednesday

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas football players will report for 2013 fall camp Wednesday, Aug. 7. Second-year head coach Charlie Weis will welcome 105 players to Lawrence as the Jayhawks prepare for the 2013 season.

KU will open practice Thursday, Aug. 8. The Jayhawks will hold their first full-pad practice on Monday, Aug. 12. Other notable dates during fall camp include: first two-a-day practice, Tuesday, Aug. 13; KU Kickoff at Corinth Square, Friday, Aug. 16 (6 p.m.); Fan Appreciation Day, Saturday, Aug. 17 (11:15 a.m.); Professor Appreciation Day, Aug. 22.

All practices are closed to the public with the exception of Fan Appreciation Day, which will be held in Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 17. Gates will open at the stadium at 10:45 a.m., with the practice slated to begin at 11:15 a.m. Weis the Jayhawk players will sign autographs for 30 minutes following the conclusion of practice. Team members will be set up at tables by position group along the track. KU football posters and other promotional items will be available at Memorial Stadium, along with rosters and schedule cards. In addition the Hyvee Hawk Zone, full of inflatables games for children, will be open from 9-11 a.m., at the KU football practice fields adjacent to Memorial Stadium on the southeast corner.

KU returns 17 starters on offense, led by the Big 12 Conference’s returning leading rusher James Sims. Sims, who recorded 1,013 rushing yards in 2012, is joined by offensive linemen Randall Dent and Aslam Sterling, along with halfback, Tony Pierson, as returning starters.

The Jayhawks return 14 letterwinners on defense, including All-Big 12 linebacker Ben Heeney. Heeney led KU and ranked third in the Big 12 and 32nd nationally in tackles with 112 in 2012. He is joined by defensive linemen Keba Agostinho, Jordan Tavai and Kevin Young as returning starters from last season.

Kansas will open the 2013 season by hosting South Dakota on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m., in Memorial Stadium. Tickets are available by contacting the Kansas Ticket office via KUAthletics.com or by calling 800-34-HAWKS.
