LAWRENCE, Kan. – Teams that execute accurately early in the season are rewarded and Monday afternoon’s full-pad scrimmage inside Memorial Stadium put truth to that statement.

“It’s an emotional game and the game rewards those who can mange that emotion properly,” head coach David Beaty said. “Not getting too high and certainly not allowing ourselves to get too low is going to be a key to our success.”

Mistakes were far and few between for the defense that disrupted the offense’s tempo and rhythm at times, including some takeaways.

“I love the way that we produced turnovers at key times today,” Beaty said. “The creating of extra possessions is vital to what we are trying to achieve defensively. I could see a focus on that today. It has to be a big part of who we are.”

Each time the offense sprung for a big play, the defense answered with a calm sense of urgency. When it needed a big play it delivered.

Coach Beaty once again stressed the importance of being a smart team, creating and preventing turnovers, and dominating the kicking game.

“The challenge moving forward is for those who experienced success today to not take a step back,” Beaty said. “And those that didn’t, need to work hard and take a step forward.”

Kansas returns to practice Tuesday.
