LAWRENCE, Kan. – High fives, hugs and smiles were abundant Saturday afternoon as Kansas football held a clinic for the residents of Cottonwood Incorporated, individuals with developmental disabilities, inside Memorial Stadium.

Head coach David Beaty and the Jayhawks broke up into groups to assist in orchestrating several different fundamental football drills. Stations included throwing, catching, tackling and kicking while words of encouragement and celebratory cheers echoed throughout the field.

“I know our kids had as much fun as those guys did, I promise you,” Beaty said. “The people of Cottonwood have been such a big part of the Lawrence community for such a long time. The thing that I am amazed is how the community wraps their arms around those folks and all the people in our community that need extra time, extra help and extra love. We are trying to teach our guys what that looks like and they have a great example of that right here with the people of Lawrence.”

Individuals who physically couldn’t partake in the drills were carried or pushed 100 yards by their favorite Jayhawk with a football in their hands to experience scoring a touchdown.

“One of the things we talk about all the time is about being entitled to nothing and being grateful for everything,” Beaty said. “The only way to really understand that is to be able to put yourself in positions and places with people that maybe don’t have as much as you have and you understand how fortunate you are – you are not entitled to that. By some stroke of good luck or some blessing from the Man above, we maybe had a little more talent than somebody else or He put his hand on us for a reason. We need to make the most of it and use the platform He gave us to be able to spread the love that He wants for us.
