Kansas Athletics and Jayhawk fans celebrate new athletic year with KU Kickoff at Corinth Square

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. – Kansas Athletics and the KU Alumni Association greeted a horde of Jayhawk fans at the 12th annual KU Kickoff at Corinth Square on Friday evening, celebrating the start of fall sports, including the football season that is just one week away.

The event, which was emceed by the voice of the Jayhawks Brian Hanni, featured inflatable games, food vendors and various giveaways. If the crowd wasn’t hyped enough for the beginning of a new year of Kansas Athletics events, the KU band and cheerleaders excited the crowd.

KU Chancellor Douglas A. Girod and Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger took the stage in front of the excited fans before head coach David Beaty and a group of players hopped up to say a few words.

Beaty thanked the Jayhawk faithful for coming out to support the team and department, and also thanked Dr. Zenger and Dr. Girod for everything they do for Kansas Athletics. When Beaty was done speaking to the fans, he turned the mic over to junior quarterback Peyton Bender. Bender, attending his first KU Kickoff, was amazed at the turnout for the event, and showed his excitement for the season and his love for KU fans.

In what turned out to be arguably the highlight of the night, junior defensive tackle Daniel Wise took the mic and led the Jayhawk fans in singing happy birthday to sophomore safety Mike Lee. With the crowd fully on board, he then used the help of the Jayhawk spirit squad to get a Rock Chalk Jayhawk chant going throughout the area.

Following their appearance on stage, the players mingled throughout the crowd, signing autographs and talking with fans about the upcoming season.
