Rock Chalk Recycle Nears its First Full Year

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Rock Chalk Recycle program, introduced in August 2013 as a result of a partnership between Kansas Athletics and KU Recycling, will continue its presence at home Jayhawk baseball and softball games this spring, as well as the 2014 spring football game at Memorial Stadium Saturday.

During the previous football season, the Rock Chalk Recycle program helped divert 33,400 pounds of waste from the landfill. With over 1,500 total volunteer hours served and over 300 total volunteers, the Rock Chalk Recycle program has been an immediate success.

The achievement of the Rock Chalk Recycle program drew national acclaim as it was recognized by Keep America Beautiful, the College and University Recycling Coalition and RecycleMania for its efforts in the 2013 Football Game Day Recycling competition.

Rock Chalk Recycle and the University of Kansas ranked as the top recycling program in the Big 12 Conference. Through this game day initiative, the University of Kansas increased game-day recycling, reduced waste sent to the landfills and decreased the carbon footprint during the 2013 football season.

“To be recognized as the top Big 12 recycling program is an honor and a direct reflection of the partnership and countless hours Kansas Athletics and KU Recycling has put into making Rock Chalk Recycle a success,” said J.D. Loudabarger, assistant athletics director for event services. “We look forward to growing Rock Chalk Recycle and competing nationally against the top university recycling programs.”

While attending KU events this spring, be sure to keep an eye out for those color-coded bags in the waste stations or signup to become a volunteer. A waste ambassador will be placed at a station during a volunteer shift of an athletic event. Volunteers will be interacting with fans, teaching the appropriate ways to sort waste into recycling, compost, or landfill categories. Volunteers may either sign up individually or as a group.
