LAWRENCE, Kan. – He’s the man behind the Kansas Athletics football and men’s and women’s radio broadcasts, but Jayhawk IMG Radio Producer/Engineer Bob Newton will be front and center when he receives the Kansas Association of Broadcasters’ Distinguished Service Award on Oct. 21 during the KAB Convention in Manhattan, Kan.

The KAB’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award is given annually for exemplary service to the community, state and broadcast industry. Nominees for the award, which started in 1969, are selected based on the information submitted under the following categories: 1. contributions to the profession; 2. broadcast career; 3. recognition and awards and 4. local, state and national activities.

Newton has been broadcasting in the state of Kansas for more than 40 years spending 32 of those years with KLWN in Lawrence as station manager, operations manager and program director. Since 1984, he has been producer/engineer for the Jayhawk IMG Radio Network and also currently serves as the engineer for the student radio stations at the KU and Baker University.

“It’s a double honor because in receiving the Distinguished Service Award and he will also be inducted in to the KAB Hall of Fame,” said Bob Davis, radio voice of KU football and men’s basketball who like Newton is entering his 30th year with the Jayhawk IMG Radio Network and was inducted into the KAB Hall of Fame in 2006. “It’s a tribute to his career in Lawrence. He worked at KLWN, has been involved in community activities and understands the role of a radio station in its community. And then he’s also done a lot of other things like our network. It’s a tribute to a guy that has stayed in one place for a long time and has been a service to the people in the community and in the broadcast industry.”
