Five Jayhawks inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2017
WICHITA, Kan. – Five former University of Kansas student-athletes greats were formally inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the Crown Uptown Theatre in Wichita Sunday evening.
KU standouts Kritsi Kloster-Burritt (track & field), Galen Fiss (baseball, football and track), Al Frame (cross country, track & field), Dean Kelley (basketball) and Jerry Waugh (basketball) were the KU representatives in the KSHOF Class of 2017. The fivesome were announced for induction in June 2017.
Eight others were also named to the KSHOF Class of 2017, including: 13-time MLB All-Star and 1980 American League MVP, George Brett of Mission Hills; Wichita Heights High School basketball coach and Wichita area tennis coach and enthusiast, Charles “Goose” Doughty; college football coaching legend from Girard, Dennis Franchione; member of Pittsburg State 1957 national championship football team and professional and college football coach John Levra from Arma; two-sport athlete at Wichita State and eight year major league baseball player from Kingman, Don Lock; junior college women’s basketball coach at Barton and Cloud Jerry McCarty from Coffeyville; K-State women’s basketball All-American Priscilla Gary-Sweeney; and Wichita State baseball All-American and member of 1989 national championship team, Eric Wedge. Charles Doughty, Galen Fiss and Dean Kelley will be honored posthumously.
The 13-member class raises the total number of Kansas Sports Hall of Fame inductees to 273. The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame is in its 56th year of operation.

KRISTI KLOSTER-BURRITT – Bishop Miege H.S., 1991 / University of Kansas, 1996
Two-time All-American and first women’s track National Champion at the University of Kansas. Won five state championships in high school at Bishop Miege in the 400 meter in 1989, and the 200 meter and the 400 meter in both 1990 and 1991. Won indoor Big Eight Conference Championship in 800 meter as freshman in 1994; finished 8th in indoor NCAA Championships in 1994 in the 800 meter. Won the indoor Big Eight Conference Championship in 800 meter in 1996; won the indoor NCAA Championship in the 800 meter in 1996. Also won the outdoor Big Eight Conference Championship in the 800 meter in 1992 and 1994. Named an indoor All-American in 1994 and 1996. Named Academic All-American in 1996. Inducted to the KU Athletics Hall of Fame.
GALEN FISS – Johnson H.S., 1948 / University of Kansas, 1952
Three sport athlete at KU in baseball, football and track. Named All-Conference football selection in 1952. Selected in the 13th round of the 1953 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns; signed instead to play baseball with the Cleveland Indians. Played one minor league season before serving two years in the Air Force. Signed with the Browns and became starter in rookie season in 1956. Played 11 NFL seasons at linebacker. Two-time Pro Bowl selection in 1962 and 1963. Intercepted 13 passes and recovered 18 fumbles in his career. Won Championship with the Browns in 1964. Football teammate of KSHOF Inductee Mike McCormack at KU; roommate and baseball teammate of KSHOF Inductee Dean Smith. Inducted to the Cleveland Browns Legends in 2013.
ALLEN “AL” FRAME – Wichita East H.S., 1952 / University of Kansas, 1956
1954 NCAA cross country National Champion. Three-time All-American; 1954 and 1955 in cross country, 1955 in track. Eight individual conference championships: six individual Big Seven Conference track and field titles; two individual Big Seven Conference cross country titles. Won conference titles in 1954 two-mile, 1955 mile, 880 and mile in 1956 in indoor track. Won conference titles in mile and two mile in outdoor track in 1955. Won 1954 and 1955 cross country conference titles. Part of nine conference championship teams at KU, including three titles in cross country, three titles in indoor track, and three titles in outdoor track. Ran at KU for KSHOF Inductee Bill Easton; teammate of KSHOF Inductees Wes Santee, Al Oerter, and Bill Nieder. Inducted to the KU Booth Athletics Hall of Fame.
DEAN KELLEY – McCune H.S., 1949 / University of Kansas, 1953
Member of second place Class B state basketball at McCune in 1949. Two Final Four appearances and an Olympic gold medal in basketball. Starting guard on 1952 KU NCAA National Championship team. Member of 1952 U.S. Olympic gold medal winning team. Member of 1953 NCAA runner up team. Only KU player to be selected to two All-NCAA Tournament teams in 1952 and 1953. Member of 1955 Pan Am gold medal team in Mexico City. Member of 1958 AAU Caterpillar Cats; selected to International Team to tour Soviet Union in 1958. KU and/or Olympic teammate of KSHOF Inductees Clyde Lovellette, Bill Hougland, Bill Leinhard, Charlie Hoag, Bob Kenney, Dean Smith, B.H. Born. Brother of KSHOF Inductee Al Kelley.
GERALD “JERRY” WAUGH – Wellington H.S., 1945 / University of Kansas, 1951
Four sport letterman at Wellington High School. Member of 1950 Big Seven Championship team at KU. Team captain as a senior in 1951. Averaged 6.6 points per contest under KSHOF Inductee Phog Allen. Played on 1951 KU team with KSHOF Inductees Clyde Lovellette, Bill Hougland, Bob Kenney, and Bill Lienhard. Began coaching career at Emporia High School before serving as assistant basketball coach under KSHOF Inductee Dick Harp for three seasons from 1957 to 1960, including 1957 Final Four team. Coached golf at KU multiple times throughout career, including men’s coach from 1958 to 1959, again in 1976. Also coached KU women’s golf from 1992 to 1999. Served as assistant athletic director for Olympic Sports at KU from 1974 to 1979. Served a term as president of the Kansas Golf Association. Inducted to the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame in 1998 and the KU Booth Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.
