KU student-athletes set several grade-point average records in Fall 2018 semester
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Athletics student-athletes set a department record with a combined grade-point average (GPA) of 3.11 during the fall 2018 semester, Kansas Athletics Director Jeff Long announced Wednesday. In the process, one team set a department record for a semester GPA and four squads set team records. Fifty student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.0 average.
Three-quarters (12) of KAI’s teams achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher last semester. Swimming and diving led the way with an all-time department-record 3.70 GPA, breaking the previous record of 3.69 set by women’s cross country in fall 2016. Swimming and diving’s 3.7 included eight team members who achieved a 4.0 GPA.
In all, 277 Kansas student-athletes earned a spot on the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll by achieving a GPA of 3.0 or higher. That represents 59 percent of student-athletes on active rosters, also an all-time department record.
Women’s cross country finished just behind swimming and diving last semester with a 3.67 GPA, followed by women’s track and field (team-record 3.42), soccer (3.38), and softball and rowing (tied at 3.30). Other teams finishing above 3.0 included women’s golf (3.28), tennis (3.24), baseball (team-record 3.15), women’s basketball (team-record 3.12), men’s cross country (3.12) and volleyball (3.05).
“I am very impressed by the academic success our student-athletes achieved last fall,” Long said. “Not only did several individual teams set GPA records, but our student-athletes also achieved an overall department GPA record. This success is a direct result of the effort and determination of our student-athletes, and also the dedication of our student-athlete support staff and the KU faculty. We will continue to strive for excellence in the classroom and in competition. I’m excited by what lies ahead.”
