LAWRENCE, Kan. – Construction crews are hard at work as Kansas Athletics prepares to add a new Jayhawk Tennis Center to its “family of stadiums” in West Lawrence.

The $9 million, indoor-outdoor, state-of-the-art facility will join Kansas’ soccer, softball, and track and field stadiums at Rock Chalk Park. It is expected to open for competition this fall.

“We are extremely excited and thankful Kansas Athletics has made a huge commitment to our program with the building of the new Jayhawk Tennis Center,” said third-year Kansas women’s tennis head coach Todd Chapman. “Thanks to our partnership with Thomas and Dru Fritzel, I believe this facility is the next step in the process of us becoming a legitimate Big 12 contender and puts us on par with the nicest facilities in the United States.”

The improving Jayhawks, ranked 30th in the nation in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, are 12-3 with victories over Top-50 teams Arkansas, New Mexico, Texas and Baylor.

The facility will feature six indoor and six outdoor courts, multiple locker rooms, meeting spaces, coaches’ offices, a team lounge, a training room and a multi-purpose room in which to watch film.

The Jayhawk Tennis Center at Rock Chalk Park will have stadium seating available both indoor and outdoor for great fan viewing of every court. The outdoor courts will have lights for evening matches and every court will have its own scoreboard.

“The new Jayhawk Tennis Center, coupled with the eight existing courts at Rock Chalk Park, will give us the opportunity to bring some big-time tennis events to Lawrence, including the Big 12 Championship and other local, regional, and national junior events,” said Chapman. “This new facility is going to be something all former, current and future Jayhawks are going to be proud of and excited about.”
