Jayhawks improve by five strokes in round two at NCAA Stanford Regional

STANFORD, Calif. – Redshirt freshman Jeff Doty carded a 3-under 67 in the second round of the NCAA Stanford Regional at the Stanford Golf Course on Tuesday as the Kansas men’s golf team improved five strokes from round one and sits in 11th place.

Kansas put together a 283 (+3) second round and now sits with a 571 (+11) total score entering the regional’s final round on Wednesday. With one round left to play, the Jayhawks are looking to advance to the NCAA Championship for the second straight season. In order to reach this feat, KU needs to finish inside the top five of the 13-team regional field. After two rounds, host Stanford leads the field at 545 (-15) and has a 10-stroke lead on second place Arizona State (555) and North Carolina (555). More importantly, KU resides 14 strokes behind fifth-place Ole Miss (557) going into Wednesday.

Doty took the reigns as the leading Jayhawk performer on Tuesday by carding a team-best 67 (-3). He was able to utilize a round where he finished with a team-high four birdies and one bogey in his 18 holes. This included finishing the front nine 2-under (33). Doty’s 141 (+1) total score has him tied for 24th in the 75-golfer field and is eight strokes behind Stanford’s Isaiah Salinda (133) who currently sits in first place.

KU sophomore Ben Sigel finished as KU’s second-best performer in round two after carding an even-par (70). He is now tied for 34th overall in the field with junior Andy Spencer at 143 (+3) for their total scores after Spencer posted a 73 (+3) in round two.

Currently in fourth place on the Kansas leaderboard is senior Charlie Hillier at 145 (+5). After carding a team-best four birdies in round two, Charlie Hillier walked off with a 74 (+4) and is tied for 52nd overall. Rounding out the Jayhawk five is sophomore Harry Hillier who shot a 73 (+3) in round two and has a 147 (+7) total. He is in a tie for 58th place.

The third and final round is set to begin at 10 a.m. (Central) on Wednesday.
