Jayhawks To Debut Student-Designed #OneTeam Jerseys At Dillons Sunflower Showdown

LAWRENCE, Kan. – When the Kansas football team takes the field for Saturday’s Dillons Sunflower Showdown against in-state rival Kansas State, all KU student-athletes will be represented through the new, student-athlete designed #OneTeam jersey.

The jersey, which was specifically designed by KU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), is supporting the #OneTeam initiative which began in 2017. The mission of #OneTeam is to celebrate KU’s diversity collectively as a student-athlete body.

Designed by SAAC, the alternate jersey the Jayhawks will wear on Saturday features a grey torso with white numbers outlined in red and blue. Kansas, in crimson, is placed directly above the jersey number, and is outlined by blue.

“#OneTeam represents the notion that while there are many student-athletes from different backgrounds, countries and different sports that at the end of the day, we are all one team at the University of Kansas,” said then-SAAC president Casey Douglas, who was instrumental in starting the initiative. “We wanted #OneTeam to embody our differences, so as a whole we are stronger and can support one another.”

With SAAC’s support, each sport designates one home game or event on its schedule as its #OneTeam game, where all student-athletes are encouraged to attend wearing their #OneTeam shirt in support of that team.

“We wanted to create an inclusive environment,” said Douglas, who lettered in baseball at KU from 2015-18. “Being in collegiate athletics you become very isolated to your team and do not get the chance, always, to meet other student-athletes. This is what prompted the creation of #OneTeam games. The result has been amazing to see a mass of student-athletes wearing their #OneTeam shirts at the sporting event cheering on their fellow student-athletes.”

The Jayhawks host the No. 22/25 Wildcats in the 2019 edition of the Dillons Sunflower Showdown in David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., on FS1.
