Jayhawks travel to Norman for ITA Central Regional Championships

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas women’s tennis continues the fall season this weekend in Norman, Oklahoma for the ITA Central Regional Championships which are hosted by Oklahoma and played at the Headington Family Tennis Center, feature 30 teams from across the region. 

All seven Jayhawks are slated to compete in the main draw for both singles and doubles.

Main draw play opens Friday, where KU kicks off on the doubles court at 8 a.m. CT. Singles competition will follow starting at 12 p.m. CT.

Senior Maria Toran Ribes and Sophomore Malkia Ngounoue are seed sixth in doubles, while Sonia Smagina and Roxana Manu come in 10th. Duo Luniuska Delgado and Julia Deming are placed 16th overall.

Six Jayhawks round out the top-32 competitors, which all will receive a first-round bye. Sophomore Smagina is seeded the highest at sixth and Ribes takes 11th. Vasiliki Karvouni and Ngounoue are placed 21st and 22nd, respectively. Freshmen Delgado (30) and Manu (31) round out the top-32.

About the Event
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country. In Division I, regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
