OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – On day one of the Big 12 Rowing Championship at Melton Hill Lake on Saturday, the University of Kansas advanced all five of its boats to Sunday’s Grand Final. Kansas finished second in four heats and third in one heat to meet the standard of the top-three in each heat advancing to the Grand Finals.

“We needed to do our job and we did that today,” Kansas head coach Rob Catloth said. “We tried to conserve as much today and maintain speech across the board and not have to sprint, which will hopefully give us more energy tomorrow. Some of our boats didn’t have gave great rows, but they still controlled things. A lot of them feel like they can reach another gear tomorrow, which is what we want.”

The event started with the First Varsity Eight (1V8) taking the water in the first heat. The boat, led by senior coxswain Mary Slattery, took second in the heat behind Texas with a time of 6:34.9. Between the two 1V8 heats, KU marked the fourth-fastest time of all the Big 12 schools.

The Second Varsity Eight (2V8) rowed its way to a 6:47.5 time for a second-place finish in 2V8 heat one.

As the day progressed, partly-cloudy skies in east Tennessee produced tail-wind gusts as high as 21 miles per hour to create white-cap waves on the waters of Melton Hill Lake.

The conditions may have made times a fraction slower, but it did not hamper KU’s ability to advance to the Grand Finals. The Jayhawks placed third in First Varsity Four (1V4) heat one with a time of 7:30.7, and KU’s Second Varsity Four wasn’t too far behind with a 7:35.5 time in its respective race, earning second place in the 2V4 heat two.

Third Varsity Eight (3V8) punched the Jayhawks’ fifth and final ticket to Sunday’s Grand Final with a second-place finish in heat two with a time of 7:00.3.

Kansas placed third in the Third Varsity Four (3V4) exhibition race to conclude the first day of the Big 12 regatta.

The Big 12’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship will be on the line as Kansas returns to the water on Sunday morning at 8:15 a.m. Central time for the Third Varsity Eight Grand Final. The day concludes with the First Varsity Eight Grand Final at approximately 10:15 a.m. Central time.
