Kansas drops final two games against Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – On the final day of competition against Iowa State, Kansas dropped both games on ISU’s Senior Day 1-0 and 4-2 at the Cyclones Sports Complex. The Jayhawks secured their spot in the 2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship after Baylor’s loss at No. 10 Texas Saturday, May 4.

Morgyn Wynne didn’t allow Kansas to remain scoreless in game two and helped propel Kansas in the series finale, but it wasn’t enough as the Jayhawks dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 4-2.

Kansas jumped out to an early one-run advantage on a home run in the first inning by Morgyn Wynne. Wynne’s home run was her seventh home run of the season and first since March 30 against Baylor.

Iowa State responded in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run of its own.

After a scoreless second, Wynne again pushed a run across the plate on a double to left center, which scored Sydnee Ramsey.

The Cyclones netted their second run in the fourth on a single down the left field line and tied the game at 2-2.

For the second time in the series, the game was forced to extra innings and Iowa State earned the walk-off victory with a two-run home run.

Lexy Mills earned the loss after pitching the final 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs with five strikeouts.

After pitching 8.1 innings in the first game of the series against Iowa State, Brynn Minorpitched another complete game against the Cyclones and again was on the wrong side of the decision. KU dropped the second game of the series 1-0 to ISU at the Cyclones Sports Complex.

Minor allowed only three hits, and the one Iowa State run in the second inning.

ISU tallied a one-out double in the second, and scored one batter later on a single down the left field line.

Kansas had its best scoring chance in the fifth inning when Madison Sykes hit a double down the left field line. A ground out advanced Sykes to third, but she was stranded after another ground out.

NOTES

  • Senior Brynn Minor pitched all six innings in game two of the series and started the first two innings against the Cyclones in the series finale. Minor pitched 23.1 consecutive innings until she was removed in the third inning of the series finale.
  • Morgyn Wynne hit her seventh home run of the season in the first inning of game two against the Cyclones.

Kansas secured its spot in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship after Baylor’s loss at No. 10 Texas Saturday, May 4. The Jayhawks are the sixth seed and will play the one and four seeds in pool play May 10.
