Kansas Relays, Subway to Host Canned Food Drive Friday

LAWRENCE, Kan. – On Friday, April 22 participants and attendees of the 89th Kansas Relays are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to the ticket entrance at Rock Chalk Park, an effort to help Just Food, the primary food bank of Douglas County.

Those who bring nonperishable food items Friday will be given a buy-one-get-one-free sandwich coupon from Subway, the primary sponsor of the Relays.

“We’re very thankful to be working with Subway to fill our pantry with nonperishable food items that will assist those in need in Douglas County,” Just Food executive director Elizabeth Keever said in the release. “The donations from the Kansas Relays food drive will benefit those in need in the surrounding areas.”

In Douglas County, 19,000 people are in need of food assistance, and over 40% are either children or the elderly. Just Food supplies more than 40 partner agencies with frozen meat and fresh produce as well as bread and food donated from community drives.

The 89th Kansas Relays will be held at Rock Chalk Park from April 20-23. The meet will feature thousands of collegiate, post-collegiate and high school track athletes from across the United States in action over four days in Lawrence. Log on to KansasRelays.com for additional information.
