Kansas Rolls Through UMass Lowell, Remains Undefeated
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas controlled their contest against UMass Lowell on Sunday, Nov. 17, with ease as they soared passed their opponent, 79-44.
Competing for a total of 33 minutes in the matchup, Senior Mariane De Carvalho tied her career-high of 15 points and secured her first double-double at Kansas with 10 rebounds. Junior Tina Stephens and sophomore Aniya Thomas also added double-digit figures of 14 and 15 to contribute to the team’s total of 79 points while the River Hawks put up 44. The Jayhawks never fell below a 15-point lead through the entirety of the second half and added another victory to their now 4-0 record on regular-season play.
Despite early foul trouble from inside the paint, the Jayhawks appeared confident on the offensive end as every player in uniform tallied a point. Though fouls limited both junior Bailey Helgren and Stephens, De Carvalho maintained intensity through all her 33 minutes as she led the team in rebounds, steals, and matched Thomas’ 15 points.
“Having Tina and Bailey both in foul trouble, it’s nice to know that if we have to, we can count on [Mariane] for that type of production,” Schneider said.
“I feel like I could play more,” De Carvalho added.
The Jayhawks plan on taking advantage of a week-long hiatus with a little rest, more film-work and additional opportunities in the gym to capitalize on their performance thus far.
“Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are really important days because it’s been a while since we’ve had the opportunity to really focus on ourselves,” Schneider said. “We really need to evaluate if there are certain areas that we need to spend our practice time.”
